About Network Bridges
Network bridges connect one network to another so that terminals on both networks can communicate as if they were part of a single network. Network bridges provide the connectivity required for communications between dissimilar segments of a local area network (LAN). For example, a network bridge can connect an Ethernet LAN segment to a token ring LAN segment. Network bridges are specified under the IEEE 802.1D standards from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics (IEEE). They are not protocol-dependent because they operate at the Data Link Layer (layer 2) of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model.
Network bridges can be used to filter network traffic between LAN segments and enforce security policies. An Ethernet bridge receives Ethernet frames and examines their headers to determine if transport is required. By recording each port, these network bridges can identify the address of each computer connected to a given port instead of determining each IP address. The Ethernet bridge then stores this information in an interface address table so that only the necessary frames are routed. Wireless network bridges are similar to standard Ethernet bridges, but conform to different standards (IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g) and use encryption methods and algorithms that adhere to wired equivalent privacy protocols. In some respects, a wireless Ethernet bridge is more flexible because it typically doesn’t require drivers or introduce complicated network address translation (NAT) routers.
