Satellite network components are used in building and connecting satellite networks. Satellite networks and satellite network components are important tools in the rapidly expanding telecommunications and data delivery industries. A satellite is a type of satellite network component that orbits the earth in space as a wireless receiver/transmitter. Communications are sent to a satellite using an antenna or earth station that sends radio signals via satellite uplinks to the satellite. The satellite receives and retransmits these signals via satellite downlinks back to other antennas or earth stations. A tripod satellite stand is a type of satellite network component that is used as a mounting system for satellite dishes on the ground.

There are many different types of satellites and satellite network components. Before the advent of modern satellite networks, troposcatter communications systems were widely used. A troposcatter satellite uses the principle of tropospheric scatter (troposcatter) to extend local communication networks. Troposcatter satellites have been used in many parts of the world to build communication systems and are used extensively by the military for long haul communications. As space satellites become more prevalent, troposcatter systems are used less frequently. Today, VSAT stations are becoming more common. A very small aperture terminal (VSAT) station or VSAT station is a small, 2-way satellite earth station or ground station used to receive and transmit satellite transmissions. VSAT satellite communication equipment is smaller than many other types of satellite equipment. VSAT dishes are smaller than 3 meters (m). Other types of satellite network components use dishes that are larger than 10 m. VSAT satellite network components do not require additional staff or technology, but instead plug into existing terminal equipment.
