About Bluetooth; Devices

Bluetooth® devices use the Bluetooth protocol and broadcast in the 2.4-GHz frequency range. They transmit short-range signals and eliminate the need for cable connections between electronic devices such as a computer and a mouse, a computer and a keyboard, and a cell phone and headset. Bluetooth is a registered trademark of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), a trade association of electronics manufacturers that promotes Bluetooth technology and ensures compliance. Although Bluetooth was designed to replace short-range cable protocols, Bluetooth technology has expanded into short-range networking. Today’s Bluetooth devices communicate via a standard radio frequency (RF) and may comply with Bluetooth versions 1.0, 1.00b, 1.1, and 1.2.

There are many types of Bluetooth devices. Examples include headsets, headphones, mice, keyboards, speakers, adapters, and dongles. Bluetooth headsets are hands-free, wireless devices for cell phone users. They attach to the caller’s ear and enable drivers to comply with laws that require headset use while operating a motorized vehicle. Similarly, Bluetooth headphones enable users of MP3 players to listen to music and other audio files without cable connections. Bluetooth mice and Bluetooth keyboards for personal computers (PC) are also available. A Bluetooth mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard are designed to connect directly to a Bluetooth PC and without a transceiver. Using such Bluetooth devices, the computer’s universal serial bus (USB) ports become available for other consumer electronics, such as a digital camera that can upload photos to a PC.
