RF Waveguide Transition Adapters

About RF Waveguide Transition Adapters

RF waveguide transition adapters are used to connect waveguide components of different cross-section sizes. They are designed for use with radio frequency (RF) waveguides, metallic transmission lines that are used at microwave frequencies to interconnect transmitters and receivers with antennas. RF waveguide transition adapters are made of aluminum, brass, bronze, copper or silver, and plated with cadmium, nickel, rhodium, silver, or tin. Non-plated products are also available. RF waveguide transition adapters have rectangular, circular or elliptical cross-sections and are available in many different flange styles. Union guide (UG) is the military standard MIL-DTL-3922 for a range of flange types. Cover or plate flanges are square, flat UG-style flanges. Chokes flanges are similar to UG flanges, but have an O-ring groove and choke cavity. CMR flanges are miniature versions of connector pressurized rectangular (CPR) flanges. CPRG flanges are grooved versions of CPR flanges and CPRF flanges are flat versions of CPR flanges.

Specifications for RF waveguide transition adapters include operating frequency range, EIA waveguide size, IEC waveguide designation, and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR). Measured in gigahertz (GHz), operating frequency range states minimum and maximum values. EIA sizes for RF waveguide transition adapters are approved by the Electronic Industry Alliance (EIA), a trade association of electronic manufacturers. EIA waveguide types include: WR-75, WR-90, WR-112, WR-137, WR-159, WR-187, WR-229 and WR-284. Designations from the International Electrotechnical Commission include R14 R32, R48, R140, and R320. Voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is a unit-less ratio ranging from one to infinity, expressing the amount of reflected energy at the input or output of the device. A value of one indicates that all of the energy will pass through, while any other value indicates that a portion of the energy will be reflected.
